Your Questions, Answered

Do I need yoga experience?

Not at all. Classes are designed to be approachable whether you’ve practiced yoga for years or have never set foot on a mat. I offer options and variations so you can work with the body you brought with you that day.

Do I need to be flexible?

Nope. Flexibility is not an admission requirement. We use movement to explore and gradually expand comfortable range of motion, balance, strength, breath, and relaxation.

What equipment do I need?

For online classes, a little clear floor space is the main requirement. A yoga mat is helpful but not essential. A sturdy chair can also be useful, and I may occasionally suggest simple props such as a towel, pillow, strap, or yoga blocks.

Do I have to be on camera?

Absolutely not. Video is always optional.

You’re welcome to participate with your camera off for the entire class.

If you do turn your camera on, your video tile may also appear on a TV at the front of the studio alongside other remote participants. This helps the in-person and online groups feel like one class rather than two separate rooms.

Being displayed on the studio TV is entirely opt-in. If you would rather participate privately, simply leave your camera off.

Why might I want my camera on?

If you’re comfortable doing so, having your camera on lets me see some of your movement and may allow me to offer suggestions or alternative approaches.

That said, online video has limitations, so you are always responsible for choosing movements that feel appropriate for your body and stopping when something doesn’t feel right.

Are online classes recorded?

Live classes are not routinely recorded.

How does joining online work?

Reserve your spot through the online schedule. After booking, you’ll receive the information needed to join the live Zoom session.

Try to connect a few minutes early so you have time to position your device and get comfortable before we begin.

How should I position my camera?

If you choose to use video, place your device far enough away that I can see as much of your body as practical while you’re standing and moving on the floor.

Perfection is unnecessary. We are teaching movement, not filming Lawrence of Arabia.

What if I have an injury, health condition, or limited mobility?

Please work within your own comfortable range and feel free to modify, skip, or stop any movement.

You’re welcome to let me know about anything that may affect your practice, but yoga instruction is not medical care. If you’re unsure whether a particular activity is appropriate for you, check with your healthcare professional.

Can I participate entirely from a chair?

Yes. Many movements can be adapted using a sturdy chair for support, seated practice, or balance assistance.

If you have specific needs, feel free to contact me before class and I’ll do my best to make the session useful and comfortable.

How much are online classes?

Online drop-in classes are $10.

Current unlimited members of The Studio in Darien may attend John Loves Yoga online classes at no additional charge.

What if I’m running late?

Join when you can. Enter quietly, take a moment to settle in, and start with something comfortable before jumping into whatever strange shape the rest of us have managed to construct.
